About the Product

Cowhorn 17 & 23 Extraction Forceps

The GMX 23 cowhorn forceps is designed for extraction of 1st, 2nd, and (when accessible) 3rd lower molars with divergent roots. Often searched as cowhorn forceps, cow horn forceps, or 23 cowhorn forceps, this lower cowhorn forceps pattern is a reliable option when conditions allow safe beak placement into the furcation.

Dr. Richard Golden considers the GMX 23 cowhorn dental forceps a valuable instrument to have available for lower molar extractions. Cowhorn forceps can be especially effective when the tooth has minimal mesial drift (less than a 20° angle), the furcation is close enough to the gingival margin to allow proper engagement (typically within about 2mm), and the crown is not fractured or heavily decayed.

What makes the GMX 23 different

  • Modified beak geometry to improve access at the furcation for divergent roots
  • Longer, more curved beaks to help reduce crown contact during placement
  • Improved adaptation for lower molars where conventional cowhorn patterns can be harder to seat
  • Ergonomic handle design for secure grip and practical control

Indications

  • Lower molars with divergent roots (1st and 2nd molars; 3rd molars if accessible)
  • Cases where furcation access allows stable beak placement
  • Situations where preserving controlled engagement is preferred over crown contact

If you routinely encounter lower molars with accessible furcations and divergent roots, the GMX 23 cowhorn forceps offers an improved design for predictable engagement and controlled extraction.
