ProTaper Gold Comparable Files: GoldenTaper Rotary Files, Same Sequence and Technique

ProTaper Gold Comparable Files: GoldenTaper Rotary Files, Same Sequence and Technique - GoldenDent
A step-by-step look at the ProTaper Gold SX, S1, S2 and F1–F5 technique, and how GoldenTaper rotary files follow the same sequence so you can switch without changing your protocol.

ProTaper® Gold is one of the most widely taught rotary sequences in endodontics. If your hands already know the SX, S1, S2 and F1–F5 sequence, you can lower your file cost without learning a new system. This guide covers how ProTaper Gold works and how GoldenTaper Rotary Endo Files follow the same file sequence and technique.

How the ProTaper Gold system works

ProTaper Gold is a rotary NiTi system from Dentsply Sirona. Its files have a progressive (variable) taper and a convex triangular cross-section. Dentsply Sirona says this design improves cutting efficiency while reducing rotational friction. The files are gold heat-treated for added flexibility and resistance to cyclic fatigue.

The system has two groups of files:

  • Shaping files (SX, S1, S2): enlarge the coronal and middle thirds with a brushing action on the outstroke. SX is an auxiliary file for orifice shaping.
  • Finishing files (F1–F5): taken passively to working length to shape the apical third. F1 is the smallest and F5 the largest.
File Tip size Role
SX 19 Orifice shaping (auxiliary)
S1 18 Shaping, coronal and middle thirds
S2 20 Shaping, middle third
F1 20 Finishing
F2 25 Finishing
F3 30 Finishing
F4 40 Finishing
F5 50 Finishing

Files come in 21, 25 and 31 mm lengths. Tapers vary along each file.

The ProTaper Gold technique, step by step

Here is the sequence from Dentsply Sirona's instructions for use, in summary:

  1. Glide path. Scout the coronal two-thirds with size 10 and 15 hand files until a smooth, reproducible glide path is confirmed.
  2. S1, then S2. Let each file float passively into the canal and brush laterally on the outstroke, to the depth reached by the 15 hand file.
  3. Apical third. Scout the apical third with hand files and establish working length. Then take S1 and S2 to working length with a brushing action.
  4. F1 to working length. Use a non-brushing motion and go to length only once, then gauge the foramen with a size 20 hand file.
  5. F2–F5 as needed. Repeat the non-brushing technique, gauging with 25, 30, 40 and 50 hand files until the apical size fits the anatomy.

Dentsply Sirona lists 300 RPM for all ProTaper Gold files, with torque set by file group, using a slow-speed endodontic motor. Always follow the instructions for use for the files and motor you are using.

GoldenTaper: ProTaper Gold comparable files, same technique

GoldenTaper Rotary Endo Files are designed to be comparable to ProTaper and ProTaper Gold files and are used with the same technique. You get:

  • The same sequence: SX, S1, S2 and F1–F5, so your current protocol carries straight over.
  • A similar design: progressively tapered files with a convex triangular cross-section.
  • Heat-treated NiTi for flexibility.
  • Pre-sterilized, single-use packaging, so there's no cleaning or re-sterilizing and no worn cutting edges from a previous case.
  • The same lengths: 21, 25 and 31 mm (SX in 19 mm), plus assorted packs.

Every GoldenTaper order is backed by GoldenDent's 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Is GoldenTaper the same as ProTaper Gold?

No. GoldenTaper is a different brand made for GoldenDent. It is designed to be comparable to ProTaper and ProTaper Gold and uses the same SX, S1, S2 and F1–F5 sequence and technique.

Do I need to change my technique to switch?

No. GoldenTaper files are used in the same manner and technique as ProTaper and ProTaper Gold, so your current protocol carries over.

Are GoldenTaper files sterile and single-use?

Yes. They come pre-sterilized for single use, which reduces the risk of cross-contamination and removes the need for cleaning and re-sterilizing files.

What lengths are available?

GoldenTaper shaping and finishing files come in 21, 25 and 31 mm. The SX file comes in 19 mm, and assorted packs are available.
